Citizenship by investment – which country?
In the last five years an increasing number of international destinations have attracted wealthy investors around the globe by offering permanent residency in exchange for investment into their economy. The most popular being USA, UK and Australia. Other countries are now tuning in to the scheme each with their own policies, investment options and costs such as Spain, Portugal and Greece.
The most popular Investment Visa and oldest of them all is the USA’s EB-5 Investment Visa. The EB-5 Visa has been going since 1990 but has only in the past 7 years sparked significant interest especially from the Chinese market. Recently changes were made to limit the amount of investors from China who for the first time this year reached their limit. No other country has come close to reaching the limit but interest from other regions (including India, UK and Iran) is growing daily as people are becoming more aware of this popular investment option. An investor must invest at least $500,000 into U.S. commercial enterprise, creating at least 10 jobs. In return, the investor and their family are able to live, work or study anywhere they want within the U.S.
Another popular residency by investment programme are the Tier 1 schemes in United Kingdom. The UK home office created the Tier 1 program to encourage foreign investment into UK businesses (entrepreneur visa) and into the UK’s financial markets (Investor Visa). The tier 1 entrepreneur visa scheme allows qualifying foreign investors to invest £200,000 into a UK business, and in return they are rewarded with residency in the UK. The tier 1 investor visa offers the same benefits to the investor and their family, but requires an investment of £1,000,000 into the UK’s financial market, through government bonds, stocks or shares.
